World's First Direct Air-Cooled Coal-Fired Power Project Starts Operation

Updated: March 09, 2023

The No.1 generator unit of the Yanghuopan coal-electricity integration power plant project in Northwest China's Shaanxi Province started service on Feb 15 after a 168-hour full-load trial operation.

Generally designed and contracted by China Energy Engineering Group Northwest China Electric Power Test Research Institute Co., Ltd., the Yanghuopan coal-electricity integration power plant includes two 660-megawatt ultra-supercritical coal-fired air-cooled generator units.

It is the world's first 660-megawatt natural ventilation direct air-cooled coal-fired power generation project and is built with the world's first natural ventilation direct air-cooled stack-in cooling tower.

As a major project in Shaanxi during China's 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25) period, it is the first export power generation plant of the North Shaanxi-Hubei ultra-high-voltage power transmission project to be put into operation.

The two units adopted many new technologies and methods during their design and construction, setting models for the construction of large-scale energy-saving and environmentally-friendly thermal power projects.

Once fully operational, the project is expected to help reduce power fees by about 13 million yuan ($1.87 million) annually. The power output equals that produced by burning 24,500 metric tons of standard coal, a reduction of 54,100 tons of carbon emissions annually.
