China Mobile: 5G Technology Boosts Smart Water Industry

Updated: June 25, 2023

The smart water industry plays an important role in the construction of digital cities.

China Mobile Anhui Branch has made increasing efforts in the smart water industry over the years, striving for digital transformation of the water industry in various application scenarios.

Smart video surveillance network protects environment of water areas

Chaohu Lake, located in Anhui Province, is one of the important water bodies in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River and an important ecological barrier along its entire length.

To protect the ecology of Chaohu Lake, China Mobile Anhui Branch has established a smart video surveillance network around the lake by using 5G instant messaging, the cloud platform and other information technologies. It realizes all-weather, intelligent real-time monitoring of the area around the lake, and improves the lake's control of blue-green algae.

Since the smart project was put into operation, the average water quality of Chaohu Lake has improved from the inferior V level in 2015 to level IV, the highest level since monitoring began in 1979.

In 2021, the first occurrence of cyanobacteria in Chaohu Lake was delayed by 56 days compared with 2020. The frequency of algae blooms, cumulative area, and density decreased by 42 percent, 20 percent, and 32 percent, respectively, and the water quality of Chaohu Lake was significantly improved. In addition, filter-feeding fish populations were able to recuperate and reproduce. Because of these improvements, aquatic biological resources in Chaohu Lake were protected.

Smart water meters monitor water supply in campus

"The use of smart water meters based on 5G technology has greatly facilitated campus water management," said Mr. Shao of the general affairs office at Anhui Normal University. "In the past, it has been a long-lasting problem of finding the dripping water pipes in time. Now, the 5G smart general affairs platform system is able to analyze the water balance using big data, and can find the water pipes with leakage problems in very little time. It allows us to arrange timely and accurate repairs."

In Anhui Normal University, the company has created a new 5G smart general affairs platform system, and deployed 5G smart water meters in the deeply buried water supply network. The remote cloud real-time monitoring of the campus water supply pipe network is realized with no need of wires or network cables, and it helps save water for the campus.

Smart management system solves construction site industrial sewage treatment

The company established an "environmental protection map" for construction sites, which is an intelligent decision-making management system, in collaboration with the modern industrial park of Zhengpugang New District, Ma'anshan City.

Based on the two-dimensional map and satellite map data of the new district, the system conducts full-coverage monitoring of atmosphere, water, soil, solid waste and noise with the 5G network.

Through the system's real-time monitoring module of illegal sewage discharge by enterprises, the real-time monitoring data of pollution sources at each monitoring point will be collected and displayed in the form of a line chart. It makes visual management of key sewage enterprises possible.

The system will automatically inform relevant staff of abnormal events in real time through telephone, text message, WeChat, and APP, in a bid to ensure that the sewage discharge is treated as soon as possible.
