China Breaks Ground on First Intercity Maglev Line

Updated: November 19, 2024

The construction of China’s first medium and low-speed intercity maglev railway, the Changsha-Liuyang Maglev Express, has commenced.

The project, designed by China Railway Construction Corporation Limited (CRCC), represents a major advance in maglev technology, making significant breakthroughs in design speed and engineering scale for this type of system.

Globally, operational medium- and low-speed maglev lines generally have a design speed of no more than 120 km/h. However, the Changsha-Liuyang Maglev Express pushes this boundary with a design speed of 160 km/h, making it a world first.

Spanning a total length of 48.73 kilometers, the line will feature 12 stations, linking the province's capital city with downtown Liuyang.

The project will proceed in two phases. The initial phase will cover 39.52 kilometers, from Changsha Huanghua Airport to Jili, and is set to open in 2029.

The new line will strengthen Changsha's connectivity and better integrate Liuyang into the Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan city cluster, promoting regional development.
