Wen Shugang, a member of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee and chairman of China Huaneng Group Co., Ltd., has said that energy security is a fundamental component of national security and a key driver of high-quality development in the Yellow River Basin.
As a vital economic corridor, the Yellow River Basin is rich in coal, oil, natural gas and nonferrous metal resources. With the growing momentum of the green and low-carbon economy, the region is accelerating the orderly transition from traditional energy to clean energy. The proportion of green electricity in the power supply continues to rise, and energy consumption per unit of GDP is steadily declining.
Wen highlighted China Huaneng’s development of the country’s first 10-million-kilowatt-class integrated renewable energy base in Gansu, a key supporting power source for the Longyuan-to-Shandong ultra-high-voltage (UHV) power transmission project. Once completed, the project will convert wind and solar energy from the Loess Plateau into green electricity and transmit it via UHV lines to Shandong, ensuring a stable supply of clean energy while optimizing the region’s energy structure and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
“As energy enterprises, we must further strengthen ecological and environmental protection, emphasizing a systematic, holistic and coordinated approach to preserving the Yellow River Basin,” Wen suggested.
He called for greater efforts to advance green and low-carbon development by building a new energy system and power grid. He also stressed the need to enhance technological innovation, using large-scale projects to drive coordinated advances in industrial and innovation chains, and to upgrade equipment toward higher-end, smarter, greener and safer solutions.
